Biography

Professor Apostolos Tsapas obtained an MD (1992) and a PhD (2002) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and subsequently qualified an MSc in Evidence-based healthcare from the University of Oxford in UK (2012). In 2009 he completed a two-year fellowship at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) at the University of Oxford, while in 2011 he worked for six months as visiting scientist in the Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit at Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN USA. Professor Tsapas is currently Head of the Second Medical Department and the Diabetes Centre at Ippokratio Hospital Thessaloniki, founding Lead Investigator of the Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Unit at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College at the University of Oxford. His expertise lies in evidence-based medicine and diabetes and he has been involved in the last four iterations (2012, 2015, 2018 & 2019) of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) consensus recommendations for treatment of hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes. His main research interests include research methodology, knowledge synthesis (systematic reviews and meta-analyses), evidence-based practice, patient-centred care and clinical decision-making in medicine and diabetes. A diabetologist and health services researcher, Prof. Tsapas is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications, many of them in top-ranking medical journals (Lancet, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, Lancet Diabetes Endocrinology, Diabetologia, Diabetes Care) with more than 12,000 citations. He is member of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) Scientific Committee, and of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Postgraduate Education Committee and Committee for Clinical Affairs.
